CIPRI grew up in South Florida to an Italian immigrant family, immersed in a bilingual household rich with European cultural influences that shaped his cross-cultural artistic sensibility. From a young age, he displayed a deep fascination with the intersections of language and sound, which guided his academic pursuits. He earned a Master’s degree in Psycholinguistics at the Universidad del País Vasco (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU) in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, under the supervision of Professor Itziar Laka, a leading syntactician renowned for her research on Basque grammar, negation in syntax, psycholinguistics, and bilingual language control. His thesis, Do Cognates Trigger Code-Switching in Highly Proficient Bilinguals? (2018), examines whether phonological and lexical similarities (cognates) facilitate code-switching in Spanish-English bilinguals via experimental tasks like self-paced reading and picture-naming. The study finds no significant triggering effect, highlighting language-switching costs and informing models of bilingual lexical activation. This psycholinguistic expertise profoundly impacts his songwriting, treating lyrics as sonic architecture — emphasizing rhythm, cadence, layered meanings, and the neurological overlaps between music and language, including code-switching dynamics. As CIPRI has noted in interviews, “studying language and music (they’re in the same part of the brain) was always intertwined for me.” He is also a polyglot and synesthete, experiences that further color his creative process, blending sensory perceptions into his compositions.
